Our Story
Softball Leinster represents and promotes the sport across the region through dedicated volunteers and teams.
Softball Leinster is an all gender, mixed slowpitch softball league. Slowpitch Softball is the basic form of the game, perfect for beginners and people who want to enjoy the social aspect of the sport. Softball Leinster was created in 2011 to manage the Leinster Softball League and promote and develop the sport in this province. While our league is competitive, we are here to encourage the many inclusive and well-being benefits of playing softball.
What is softball?
Softball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of ten players. It is a direct descendant of baseball although there are some key differences: softballs are larger than baseballs, and the pitches are thrown underhand rather than overhand. Softball is played on a smaller field than in baseball.
Despite the game’s name, the standard softball is not soft; in fact, it is harder than a baseball.
Softball is played between two teams on a large field called a “diamond”, with ten players from one team on the field at a time. There are four bases on the infield (first base, second base, third base and home plate). The pitcher stands on a pitcher’s plate near the centre of this square; the catcher stands behind home plate. There are four infielders guarding the other infield bases, and four outfielders.
The object of the game is to score more runs (points) than the other team by batting (hitting) a ball into play and running around the bases, touching each one in succession.
The game is officiated by one or more neutral umpires.
